EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HUMANE SOCIETY OF ST LUCIE COUNTY

Port St Lucie, Florida

SNAPSHOT OF THE POSITION

Salary: $90,000-$120,000 per year based on experience

Full-Time Schedule

Monday to Friday with occasional weekend and evening events

The Humane Society of St Lucie County (HSSLC) is a No-Kill animal welfare organization located in Port St Lucie, Florida that is dedicated to providing compassionate, loving care to every animal in our shelter for as long as it takes to find them their “furever” home. We have a staff of 35, more than 150 volunteers, and an operating budget of over $2.2M. Our revenue comes from the City of Port St Lucie, dozens of sponsors, hundreds of local donors, various fundraisers, and our Thrift Shop. We serve the 250,000 residents of Port St. Lucie by caring for and adopting over 1,000 cats and dogs per year. We have a veterinary clinic and a full-time veterinarian to care for the animals in our shelter. Our Live Release Rate is 97%+ and we also have a very active foster care program.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director upholds the mission of HSSLC, supports its goals, and works closely with the Board of Directors to provide informed decision-making. The Executive Director is responsible for the operations of the organization; the health and welfare of the animals in its care; the management and development of current and new programs; the selection, training, supervision, and deployment of shelter staff and shelter volunteers.

The Executive Director is expected to be a dynamic liaison between the Staff, the Board of Directors, the community, and the City of Port St. Lucie. The Executive Director will be the shelter’s visible spokesperson who is heavily involved in community outreach and will work with the City and business leaders to promote the goals and visions of the HSSLC. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors through the Chairperson.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

*Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in non-profit management, business administration, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.

*A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory/managerial position.

*Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong public speaking skills.

*Understanding of financial management and accounting principles such as P&Ls, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow Projections, and Budgets.

*Ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic organization and problem-solving skills, which support sound decision-making.

*Experience in Fundraising and building Community Relations with large sponsors, donors, community groups, local officials, and other animal care organizations.

*Strong motivational, management, and interpersonal skills to provide staff and community leadership.

*Ability to be flexible and able to adapt to immediate or unforeseen challenges.

*A passion for animal welfare to support the shelter’s goals for maintaining a high quality of life for the shelter animals.

*Must have a Valid Driver’s License.

*Must be able to pass a drug and background check.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Executive Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Personnel Management:

Oversee all employees, including Clinic and Thrift Store staff, oversee all volunteers, including the hiring, scheduling, performance evaluations, promotions, and terminations.

Oversee shelter programs with other community organizations.

Supervise and oversee the activities and performances of all outside vendors, contractors, and consultants to ensure the fulfillment of contractual obligations.

 

Shelter Operations:

Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Oversee management of the Thrift Shop operations and maintenance.

Provide exceptional customer service.

Manage effectively and ensure high-quality animal care systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components and successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board of Directors, Staff, Donors, and others.

Oversee and manage the maintenance of the Shelter facilities and property.

Oversee supplies and retail inventory.

 

Board of Directors Liaison:

Uphold the Mission, Values, Policies, and Goals of the HSSLC as established by the Board of Directors.

Work with the BOD to establish goals and strategies to advance the vision and mission of the HSSLC.

Prepare monthly reports to present at the monthly Board Meetings, including financial reports, and other information on shelter intake and adoptions.

Work with the Board of Directors to enhance existing programs and develop new programs.

Keep the BOD informed of any important developments or issues that affect the HSSLC.

Perform any additional duties as directed by the Board.

 

Financial Management:

Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board of Directors, including P&Ls, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Projections.

Work with the Board of Directors to develop operating budgets.

Manage finances of the shelters, including accounts receivable and accounts payable.

Oversee and manage payroll, as necessary.

Fundraising, Community Outreach, and Public Relations:

Build and maintain relationships with funders and donors. Great emphasis must be provided on the need to develop beneficial relationships with donors, sponsors, government officials, local leaders, civic organizations, local businesses, and other animal care organizations to enhance and promote the HSSLC.

Ensure that the HSSLC actively pursues all possible grant opportunities.

Develop fundraising and marketing efforts to promote the HSSLC in conjunction with the Director of Development and the BOD Fundraising Committee.
