Job Description

The University of Notre Dame seeks to appoint a postdoctoral fellow in Water Quality Microbiology to support a multi-year project on Innovative Solutions to Interlinked Water Insecurity, Poverty, and Poor Health in Africa’s Urban Slums, sponsored by the Notre Dame Poverty Initiative. The Project’s long-term goal is to understand how poverty interacts with water insecurity to exacerbate health disparities in slums and develop interventions to address these intertwined challenges. The postdoctoral scholar will be advised by an interdisciplinary team of PIs, namely Kyle Bibby (Environmental Engineering), Ellis Adams (Geography and Environmental Policy), Liz Wood (Global Health), Mat Sisk (GIS), and Santosh Kumar (Developmental Economics). Candidates should be available to travel to Malawi for fieldwork. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding availability.

Responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will lead the collection and analysis of water quality data, including field work in collaboration with the Centre for Water, Sanitation, Health and Appropriate Technology Development (WASHTED) within the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences. They will:
  • Develop and implement molecular water quality monitoring tools
  • Collaboratively collect and analyze water samples
  • Advise and train students and collaborators in water quality measurement approaches
  • Facilitate research meetings with collaborators in Malawi
  • Perform other research-related duties required for the project, including data analysis and manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in environmental engineering, public health, environmental microbiology, chemical engineering, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

Experience collecting water samples, analyzing water samples, and program management
