Essential Job Duties

We are seeking a professional and skilled Acoustical Ceiling Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for installing and repairing ceilings in our academic, housing, and research buildings. Your duties will include cutting, hanging, and finishing ceiling materials such as drywall, acoustic tile, plaster, and other specialty materials. You will collaborate with other departments to ensure timely responses to client needs and adherence to project timelines. Key responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:
  • Measure and mark surfaces according to blueprints or drawings using tape measures, straightedges, or squares.
  • Fit and install plasterboard and other ceiling materials, and Measure and cut openings in panels or tiles for electrical outlets, windows, vents, plumbing, or other fixtures.
  • Cut, shape, and fix decorative cornices, coving, and other ceiling trims.
  • Fit acoustic and fireproofing materials.
  • Cut and assemble metal channels to create ceiling frames based on room or hallway plans.
  • Apply or mount acoustical tiles, blocks, strips, or sheets to ceilings to reduce sound reflection or decorate rooms.
  • Mount tiles using adhesives, nails, screws, staples, or wire-tying lath directly to structural frameworks.
  • Manage preventative maintenance orders and update, resolve, and close assigned work orders in the AIM work order management system.
  • Replace, install, and position ceiling grids efficiently.
  • Assist with flood remediation response efforts.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate leaks, ensuring proper procedures for safety and compliance.
  • Collaborate with roofing and other contractors to accurately define and schedule project timelines.
  • Provide inventory assistance to maintain up-to-date supplies.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective customer service.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. 
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Knows and functions in at least one other trade and possesses general knowledge of others.
  • Assists other trades as required.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public. Understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the roofing/tile trade.
  • The primary functions of the position require the ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer experience working in a university performing ceiling tile installation and repairs.

Required License or Certification

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire and it must be maintained.
