Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position will provide support for the Human Research Protections Office (HRPO), which includes the offices of the Human Research Protection Program (Institutional Review Board & Quality Assurance Program).

The primary function of the IRB Analyst is to support the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) through the review of initial, amendment, and continuing review applications. The IRB is responsible for the confidential review and approval of UMCP human subject research. UMCP adheres to the principles of the Belmont Report and assures full compliance with all Federal regulations, State laws, and University policies governing human subject research. The IRB Analyst conducts reviews in an objective, systematic way in which the University can assure research sponsors and Federal agencies that human subject research at UMCP is compliant with applicable Federal and State regulations, and University policies, and thereby protects the safety and welfare of human research participants.

More specifically, duties include, but are not limited to: conducting pre-reviews of IRB applications, facilitating monthly IRB meetings; training and providing guidance to IRB Members and necessary University faculty and staff on human subject protections regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures; providing technical and policy assistances to investigators, staff, and IRB Members; remaining current on proposed rules, regulations, and legislation affect the conduct of human subject research review. This position will report directly to the Director of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).

This position will dedicate its time to independent work with the Institutional Review Board. This will include completing reviews of new IRB project applications, organizing and taking minutes for IRB Meetings, assisting with the Reliance Agreement process for the IRB, and participating in education and training development. By doing this, the position will advance the mission of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) through completion of a variety of tasks and long-term projects, such as maintaining HRPP accreditation and improving the human subject research training environment.

This position will also perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
BA/BS required. 

Experience:
At least two years of research office experience in medical, health care, educational, research, or academic setting.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • The incumbent must have knowledge of federal regulations and guidelines for conduct of research involving human subjects, and/or conflict of interest; strong interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication skills; computer literacy and experience using the Internet; and the ability to respond quickly to a variety of requests and needs. 
  • Must have experience in database management, using Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and Adobe applications. 
  • Must have the ability to create and maintain processes for tracking compliance functions and documentation.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • A graduate degree is preferred.
  • Certified IRB Professional (CIP) completion preferred or must obtain CIP certification within two years of start of employment.
  • Experience in a large college, university, or other research institution. 
  • Experience conducting research as a researcher or member of a research team. 
  • Previous experience as an IRB Member.

Additional Information:

  • Target Salary Range $57,678 – $72,097.
