Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

We seek a highly skilled, experienced Student Financial Aid expert and leader to join our team as Associate Director. By working independently and with others representing OSFA, the Associate Director will work to improve and meet the University of Maryland’s (UMD) student recruitment, yield, retention, and success strategic goals focusing on low-income students. The incumbent ensures that federal, state, and institutional aid programs and budgets are awarded and administered according to federal, state, and institutional policies and requirements. The Associate Director is expected to maintain, develop, and modify policies and procedures for the Student Support area, and coordinate and communicate all activities with the Director of OSFA.

The Associate Director examines and updates business processes, researches, and implements best practice financial aid service delivery methods. Representing OSFA, the Associate Director participates in campus, regional, state, and national conferences and training opportunities to stay up-to-date and implement/update institutional, state, and federal student financial aid requirements and policies. The Associate Director will assist/advise the Director and the Associate Vice President in financial aid strategy, will interpret financial aid regulations and guidances, and work with others in OSFA and other campus partners leading or co-loading federal, state, and institutional compliance audit requirements.

The Associate Director supervises and coordinates the duties of Assistant Directors and Financial Aid Counselors in the Student Support unit of OSFA. The Associate Director participates in advising students, staff, and the campus community via one-on-one advising, publications, and making presentations to diverse audiences on financial aid programs, budgeting, and financial planning. Other duties include ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness and quality of customer service to students, families, and the campus community, recommending improvements, and initiating changes. Weekend and evening hours as required.

Major responsibilities include general office administration of the Counseling and Public Inquiry areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Experience:
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in a higher education financial aid office with 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Must possess effective counseling, leadership and managerial supervisory skills and experience.
  • Experience with computerized office systems including but not limited to; Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and data orally and in writing.
  • Record maintenance skills.
  • Ability to process computer data, format, and generate reports.
  • Ability to organize and maintain deadlines with multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies and procedures typically found at four-year colleges and universities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service to students, parents, faculty, staff and community leaders.
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies and procedures typically found at four-year colleges and universities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and data orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to assign tasks and effectively supervise subordinates.

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a large institution.
  • Experience working with Enrollment Management Models.

Additional Information:

Salary range is $104,000 – $130,000.
