Essential Job Duties
This position will respond to fire related incidents and hazardous materials incidents when dispatched. This position will also serve in an on-call rotation for the fire and life safety team. This position will assist in the management and inspections of the University facilities as well as special events. This position will be required to work special events as needed.
Other Responsibilities
This position requires the employee to wear a department furnished uniform according to policy. Other duties/responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the University Fire & Life Safety Manager.
Minimum Experience/Education
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must be able obtain specific training based on the software systems applicable to each project.
- Must have an advanced knowledge of the state building Codes, NFPA Standards and the State Construction Guidelines.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and project documents.
- Knowledge to effectively provide code based comments and justifications to architects and engineers.
- Ability to make code based decisions without consulting others in EHS.
- Ability to read & interpret codes, rules and guidelines.
- Maintain N.C. EMT- B level certification through in-service training provided by the department.
- Document medical care provided to the sick or injured in approved format and report form.
- Maintain emergency medical equipment in a constant ready state.
- Ability to treat all patients with approved and recognized protocols set forth by the Wake County Medical Director.
- Ability to work with student health on campus to ensure students receive proper attention expected by University Policy.
- Must have knowledge of properly handling Hazardous Materials, storage and use of, as well as related Federal, State, and University regulations, rules, and policies to include OSHA guidelines.
- Must be knowledgeable about how to conduct and assess equipment functionality for sprinkler testing.
- Ability to conduct required inspections of buildings assigned for violations of local, state, and federal codes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all building occupants.
- Ability to assist with emergency evacuation plans as needed.
- Ability to conduct/evaluate emergency evacuation drills in building for compliance of the N.C. Fire code and US Department of Education standards.
- Knowledge of accepted educational practices in public education.
- Knowledge of techniques used to educate young adults.
- Ability to develop a strong relationship with campus departments, students, staff, and faculty by making site visits and giving presentations at functions.
- Demonstrates understanding of why policies and procedures are critical to workplace safety and health.
- Ability to communicate safety and health tips to the Campus community.
- Ability to communicate openly and effectively through interpersonal interactions and written communication.
- Ability to develop a good working relationship with building liaisons.
- Demonstrates support of the University Fire and Life Safety through proactively reaching out to the Campus community in offering educational support.
- Ability to use sensitivity and respect while providing medical care to all patients.
- Protect patient’s personal information according to NC Law.
- Demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out ICS operations on incident scenes.
- Must be able to wear a departmental furnished uniform according to policy.
- Must be able to lift 90 pounds.
- Must be able to climb a ladder.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification, plan reviews, sprinkler testing, advanced knowledge of N.C. fire code, building code, NFPA standards.
Required License or Certification
- N.C. EMT-B.
- Certified firefighter I or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license is required at start date and must maintained.
