The Mecklenburg County Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Program Assistant is an employee of NC Cooperative Extension, NC State University. Under the supervision of the County Extension Director (CED), the ANR Program Assistant will work with the Agriculture and Natural Resources Agents(s) to help to expand the overall urban agriculture and horticulture programs in Mecklenburg County.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Mecklenburg County is a county located in the southwestern region of the state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,115,482. Making it the second-most populous county in North Carolina (after Wake County) and the first county in the Carolinas to surpass one million in population. Its county seat is Charlotte and is the state’s largest city.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The ANR Program Assistant will:
  • Assist with the delivery, training, and/or teaching of approved curriculum to adults and/or youth groups related to agriculture education in urban areas
  • Submit required program records and evaluations
  • Promote the ANR program with the general public and targeted audiences
  • Assist in recruiting volunteers from within the community to disseminate research-based information through Extension programming
  • Cllaborate with the staff of the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Mecklenburg County Center staff and partner agencies/organizations
  • Assist with securing program resources

The ANR Program Assistant receives programmatic guidance from the ANR Agent(s) with overall supervision provided by the CED. The ANR Program Assistant works directly with the ANR Agent(s) and the CED to meet the needs of the county. Renewal of the position is contingent on the availability of funds.

The ANR Program Assistant works with participants in group settings and individually (as needed). While performing this role. the ANR Program Assistant will:

  • Travel within the county, district, and state using state, county, or often a personal vehicle. A personal vehicle is required. Travel reimbursement is provided according to state guidelines
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the role of NCCE as an educational agency
  • Facilitate the collection of required data (including program evaluations) and submit reports to the Extension Reporting system (ERS), the Mecklenburg County ANR Agent(s), and the Mecklenburg County CED
  • Maintain confidentiality of program information.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with agencies and organizations serving ANR audiences
  • Coordinate with collaborating agencies to extend program outreach
  • Attend and participate in required ANR related meetings and training within the county and outside of the county; a few may include overnight travel
  • Engage in lifelong learning and professional development by participating in training and other opportunities as designated by the State ANR Program Leader(s), the County Extension Director, and the District Extension Director
  • Enhance program visibility by communicating program impacts to local stakeholders and potential participants.
  • Promote educational opportunities beyond ANR within N.C. Cooperative Extension to partnering agencies and program participants
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and utilization of volunteers to assist in program promotion, planning, and delivery
  • Meet established programmatic standards for performance and impact
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.
